Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve welding efficiency and the reliability of weld zones by correcting the weld defects produced by the MIG welding of a preceding electrode by means of TIG welding by the succeeding electrode in performing vertical or horizontal welding of base metals in their narrow groove.
CONSTITUTION: Two electrodes 12, 18 are disposed within the narrow groove space 2 between the base metals 1, 1' to be welded, with respect to the vertical upward progression 9 in said space. The preceding electrode is the consumable electrode 12, which is continuously supplied via a contact tube 11. This electrode forms beads 15 by single layer single pass by a weaving system in a manner that the welding locus assumes a waveform 19 owing to the constant bending habit given to the end part of said electrode. The succeeding electrode is the nonconsumable electrode 18, and while an inert gas is being fed, the arc is generated between the electrode 18 and beads 15, by the heat whereof, TIG welding is accomplished. This TIG welding is also performed by a weaving system in the manner similar to that in MIG welding, so that the dripping, lack of fusion, etc. of the beads 15 produced by the MIG welding are remelted to a sound weld state.
