Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily produce highly corrosion-resistant welded cans by applying nonelectrolytic plated coating of corrosion resistant metal to the bare surface of the weld zone and surrounding steel of a welded can made of a blank material such as plated or surface-treated steel sheet. CONSTITUTION:A blank material plate such as a surface-treated or plated steel plate is overlapped at its opposing end sides and welded by means of an electric resistance method. Oxide film produced at the welded zone and surrounding area is removed by pickling and then is washed with water. The welded can is immersed in a nonelectrolytic plating bath of corrosion resistant metal (alloy) such as Ni, Sn, and Cu or their alloy thereby applying plating on the cut-edge part, welded zone and surrounding surface where base steel is exposed. Then, the can is washed with water and dried so that the welded zone and its surrounding are repaired to obtain corrosion resistance. It is possible to apply this method to repair welded cans of any diameter such as aerosol can, beverage can, and food can.
