PURPOSE:To improve dispersibility of magnetic powder and the heat-resistant property of the magnetic layer, by using a specific copolymer and an urethane prepolymer as binder components of magnetic powder. CONSTITUTION:3-50wt% trifunctional low-molecular weight isocyanate compound (C) is added to the material where one copolymer (A) selected from the vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, the vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol copolymer containing 6wt% vinyl alcohol, and the vinyl chloride-vinyl acetatemaleic acid copolymer and 5-60wt% urethane polymer (B) of 1,000-10,000 molecular weight having the urethane radical and having the hydroxyl radical at the terminal are mixed, thereby obtaining binder components. Next, the magnetic coating material obtained by dispersing these binder components and magnetic powder in the organic solvent is applied onto the substance and is dried to form a magnetic layer. A magnetic recording medium is obtained which has a high maximum magnetic flux density and is superior in flexibility.
