PURPOSE:To improve S/N of the reproducing signal and reproduce the tape of a narrow track width compatibly, by performing the tracking control of the rotary head on a basis of the control signal led out from components corresponding to the synchronizing signal of the FM reproducing signal. CONSTITUTION:After demodulated by demodulator 3, the reproducing FM signal from rotary head 1 is supplied to video amplifier 5 through LPF4. The synchronizing signal is separated from the demodulated signal of LPF4 by 7, and the signal of components corresponding to the synchronizing signal which is formed by the circuit consisting of monostable multivibrators 9 and 10 is supplied to envelope detector 12 through switch 11, and the detection output is sampled in 13 and is given to memory 18 and voltage comparator 19, and the comparison output is transmitted to system control part 17. Control part 17 refers to the voltage stored in memory 16 to control voltage generating circuit 14 and generates a voltage where a maximum reproducing signal is always obtained. This voltage is supplied to head moving mechanism 15, and head 1 performs scanning while following the curve of the track by the operation of mechanism 15.
