Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer useful as a coagulating agent or a recovering agent for crude oil, by a method wherein a polyacrylamide is hydrolyzed in the presence of an alcohol by adding an aq. soln. of a caustic alkali to a dispersion of a hydrous polyacrylamide.
CONSTITUTION: In a process for producing partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide comprising dispersing an aq. soln. of acrylamide in the form of a water-in-oil type phase by using an oil-soluble high-molecular material (e.g. a water-insoluble and oil- soluble cellulose propionate) as a dispersion stabilizer, carrying out a polymn. reaction and then modifying the resulting hydrous polyacrylamide, the polyacrylamide is hydrolyzed in the presence of an alcohol (e.g. methanol or isopropanol) in an amount of 5W100wt% based on the weight of the hydrous polyacrylamide by adding an aq. soln. of a caustic alkali (e.g. an aq. soln. of NaOH) in an amount of 1W100mol% (calculated as caustic alkali) based on the amount of the starting material acrylamide, to the dispersion of the hydrous polyacrylamide to obtain the desired beady partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide.
