Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a purified fatty acid resistant to discoloration with time, easily, by removing by-produced high-boiling components from the reaction system prior to the oxidation of the crude fatty acid obtained by reacting an alcohol with CO in the presence of a catalyst such as HF-H2O and removing the catalyst from the product.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol is made to react with CO in the presence of a catalyst comprising HF, HF-H2O, or HF-BF3-H2O without solvent or in a solvent, and the reaction product is separated into an organic phase containing fatty acid and a catalyst phase by hydrolysis or thermal decomposition. The high-boiling components by-produced by the reaction and existing in the crude fatty acid thus obtained are removed e.g. by distillation, and the fatty acid is treated with an oxidizing agent to obtain purified fatty acid. When the oxidizing agent is air, the oxygen partial pressure in the gaseous phase in the reactor is ≥0.5kg/cm2 and the reaction temperature is pref. 50W300°C, and when it is hydrogen peroxide, ≥0.001pt.wt. of a 30wt% aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide is added to 1pt.wt. of the crude fatty acid, and oxidized pref. at 0W200°C.
