Abstract

PURPOSE: To extinguish foams occurring on the surface layer of molten glass and to increase solubility per hour without reducing the quality of a product, by adding solid sulfur to the surface of molten glass in a tank furnace at a place after a feed opening for a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: The foam layer 10 is always formed on the surface layer of molten glass near the glass raw material heap 9 fed from the feed opening 4 equipped at one end of the dissolving bath 2 of the tank furnace 1. Since the foam layer has good heat insulating properties, the increase or its area with the expansion of feed of raw material reduces the heat transfer from the atomosphere in the tank furnace to the molten glass 6, dissolution and purification actions decrease, and the formation region of the foam layer 10 widens further, bringing about the cause of bad product. The addition of solid sulfur near the rear part of the dissolving both 2 or the front part of the adjusting bath 3 extinguishes foams by its jumping and pufifies molten glass. Though an amount of the solid sulfur to be added differs depending upon the structure of a furnace, an amount of the raw material to be added per hour, etc. and is not decided readily, about 0.01W1kg solid sulfur based on 1 ton molten glass is preferable.
