Abstract

The brake unit (e.g. for use in controlling draw works of a drilling rig comprises an input shaft (22) which operates to drive a gear pump (96) for circulating oil under pressure over interposed brake discs (136) and plates (140) and through restricted openings (162) during a first direction of rotation such as during lowering of the pipe stands so as both to cool and to lubricate the discs and plates the oil under pressure being operative to move a piston (142) to bring discs and plates into braking relationship upon speed increase to a certain point to provide self-governing speed regulation. During an opposite rotation of the input shaft, such as during raising of the pipe stands, an alternative flowpath is provided by- passing the restricted orifices so as to reduce the drag during raising of the pipe stands. An oil sealing arrangement prevents oil leakage between the input shaft and housing due to the high pressure generated therein, and Figure 7 shows further details of the lubricating system utilizing tanks (212,220). <IMAGE>
