Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain title polymer having excellent heat and chemical resistance, by polymerizing in solid state prepolymer resulting from the reaction of dihydroxyarom. cpd. and arom. dicarboxylic acid with diaryl carbonate in a specified molar ratio.
CONSTITUTION: (a) Dihydroxyarom. cpd. such as hydroquinone or resorcinol and (b) arom. dicarboxylic acid such as terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, or naphthalenedicarboxylic acid are reacted with (c) diaryl carbonate such as diphenyl carbonate or dicresyl carbonate at a temp. of from 200W300°C, preferably 250W 290°C, in an amt. determined by equations I and II (wherein [A], [B] and [C] represent the moles of the components a, b and c, respectively) to produce prepolymer. The prepolymer is polymerized in solid state to obtain the desired arom. polyester carbonate.
