PURPOSE:To improve dispersibility of a high solid content active clay slurry by adding a latex base binder to an aqueous phase before dispersing active clay, singly or together with an inert clayey substance, in water. CONSTITUTION:Active clay is dispersed, singly or together with an inert clayey substance, in an aqueous solution added in advance with a latex base binder, to prepare a clay slurry. It is preferable to adjust the pH of the aqueous solution within the range of 9.0-11.0 before the active clay is dispersed therein. Acid-treated montmorillonite clay or bentonite clay is suitably used as the active clay; kaolin, calcium bicarbonate, or the like is used as the inert clayey substance; and styrene-butadiene base latex or acrylic latex is suitably used as the binder.
