Abstract

PURPOSE: A polyvinyl acetate resulting from polymerization in ethanol is saponified in ethanol to produce said chewing gum base that is readily plasticized with water to give suitable softness and adhesion.
CONSTITUTION: Vinyl acetate is polymerized in a solvent of ethanol using a catalyst of peroxide to form a polyvinyl acetate of 100W500 polymerization degree. The polymer solution in ethanol is saponified using an alkaline or acidic catalyst until the saponification degree reaches 10W35mol% and then neutralized. After the completion of saponification, ethanol steam is blown into the mixture to remove the ethyl acetate formed in saponification as an azeotropic mixture. Then, the ethanol is removed and the resulting solid of partially saponified polyvinyl acetate is treated with hot water to remove water-soluble impurities.
