Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide steel having a partial form memory effect by adding 14W20% Mn and adding C so that a specified relation is satisfied between the Mn and C.
CONSTITUTION: A compressive plastic working strain is applied to steel products, and when they are heated to the As point or above and cooled to room temp. below the Ms point, the lengths of the products do not finally return to the point O, i.e. the lengths before the heating but return to the point F, the products being elongated. Such phenomenon is considered to be the partial form memory effect of the products. In case a tensile working strain is applied before the heating, the final lengths shift to the left side of the point O, giving a compressive state. In order to provide such characteristics 14W20% Mn in added to Fe, and C is added in relation to the Mn content while satisfying equation -0.04Mn+0.85≤C≤-0.04Mn+ 1.2. When a bolt or the like is made of steel of this compsn., used to clamp materials, heated to the As point or above, and cooled, the bolt does not return to the original state to prevent the clamped portion from loosening owing to vibration, etc.
