Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the intake efficiency of internal combustion engine by providing a valve actuating mechanism, wherein a tappet guiding member accomodating the tappet of a valve actuating mechanism is rotatively moved to change the opening and closing timing of the intake valve thereby to optimize the overlap of opening periods of the intake and the exhaust valve over wide range of engine operation covering the low speed and high speed operation regions. CONSTITUTION:A rocker arm 5 is provided at its one end with an operation point 5c contacting the upper end surface of the valve rod 7 and at the other end with an acting point 5r for contacting the contact point 3c of a tappet 3. This acting point 5r is formed to have an arcuate surface following a circle which is centered at the axis 2c of the cam shaft in the state in which the valve is closed. The tappet 3 is reciprocatably accomodated by a tappet guiding member 4 which is rotatable around the axis 2c of the cam shaft. The arrangement is such that the tappet 3 is rotated by an angle X as a lever 8 integral with the tappet guide member 4 rotates by an angle Y. The rotational position of the lever 8 is controlled in accordance with the engine speed by means of a servo motor or the like.
