Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a copolymer useful as a sizing agent for paper, etc. and having reduced molecular wight and viscosity, by treating a polyvinyl alcohol-grafted starch with an acid or an enzyme or by roasting the starch to effect mild hydrolyzation.
CONSTITUTION: A starch-vinyl ester graft copolymer is prepared by a conventional grafting method, e.g. addition of a catalyst such as a peroxide, etc. to an aqueous solution of a mixture of a vinyl ester (e.g. vinyl acetate, etc.) and starch (e.g. tapioca starch, etc.) followed by graft polymerization. The copolymer is saponified in an aqueous solution of a base, e.g. sodium hydroxide, etc., and thereafter moderately hydrolyzed by treating the product with an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, etc., or an enzyme, e.g. amylase, etc., or by roasting and dehydrating the product at about 150°C with an evaporator, to give the desired copolymer.
