Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain stably a polyester useful as film material, etc., having improved transparency and color tone, by submitting bis(β-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate or a composition consisting mainly of the compound to polycondensation using antimony trioxide with specific properties as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Bis( β-hydroxyethyl )terephthalate or a composition consisting mainly of the compound undergoes polycondensation using antimony trioxide having low impurity content and a solution haze per 10mm thickness not more than 2% measured by using 1wt% ethylene glycol solution of antimony trioxide to give stably a polyester having improved transparency and color tone. This method can be applied not only to the production of polyethylene terephthalate but also to that of a polyester consisting of bis(β-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate as a main component and isophthalic acid, adipic acid, and propylene glycol as copolymerization components.
