Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester useful as fibers having improved transparency and color, by polycondensation of bis (β-hydroxyethyl)-terephthalate (B) or a composition consisting mainly of B in the presence of a specific organomagnasium salt as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Bis (hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (B) or a composition consisting mainly of B is subjected to polycondensation in the presence of 10×10-4 mole or more, but 200×10-4 mole or less per mole of the acid component constituting the polyester of a magnesium salt of a benzene-dicarboxylic acid mono(β-hydroxyethyl) ester as a catalyst in the form of an ethylene glycol solution. This method is applicable not only to polyethylene terephthalate but also to a copolyester with isophthalic acid and propylene glycol.
