Abstract

PURPOSE: To orderly treat surplus lengths in a narrow space and minimize the transmission losses of optical fibers by placing the fibers having surplus lengths along a cylinder having flanges and winding the loops made of the surplus lengths onto the cylinder.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 100 having a surplus length is placed along a cylinder 10 across flanges 12 and 14. A circular loop making contact with the inside surfaces of the flanges 12, 14 is made by the surplus length between the flanges 12 and 14. More specifically, the fiber 100 led onto the cylinder 10 through a slit 16 is curved along the side surface of the cylinder 10 and is put outside by passing through a slit 18. The radius r of the cylinder 10 and the spacing 2R of the flanges 12, 14 may be obtained through calculation so as to suppress the increase in the losses by bending to less than the specified. Hence, the surplus lengths of the optical fibers may be treated in the narrow space with good workability and the transmission losses may be minimized.
