Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the metal powder which does not contain any oxide, is of irregular shape and is suited for raw material for sintered moldings and powder forgings by disintegrating molten metal in a non-oxidative atmosphere by an atmosphere by an atomization method using non-polar solvent and further subjecting the same to softening heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal 2 in a vessel 1 which is cut off from the atmosphere and is put in a non-oxidative atmosphere is atomized into an atomization cell 5 from a nozzle 4 with non-polar solvents such as kerosene and benzene or mineral oils and vegetable oils as an atomization medium. The inside of the atomization cell 5 is of course a non-oxidative atmosphere, in which the molten metal 2 is quenched by the atomization medium to become fine powder of irregular shapes. After the fine powder accumulates in the lower part of the cell 5, it is put in a hopper 18 by a classifier 7. The atomization medium having accumulated in the cell 5 is removed of solids by way of a thickener 8 and filter 12 and is cooled in a cooler 10, after which it is recirculated for atomization. The metal powder next enters a fluidized bed furnace 24, where the deposited atomization medium is evaporated by the high temperature gas generated by a heater 26 in the layers of the upper two stages, after which the quench-hardened mateial is softened by heating with a heater 26, whereby it is made easier for use as sintering raw material, etc.
