Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain reliable seal for a rotary engine by urging its apex seals onto the inner surface of center casing by a force proportional to the urging force of spring and to prevent that chtter marks be formed on the inner surface of center casing.
CONSTITUTION: Thickness at sliding contact portion 1 of apex seal that is kept in sliding contact with the inner surface of center casing is made smaller than that at suporting portion 2 for supporting the sliding contact portion 1. Top end 5 of the wall surface interposed between adjacent apex seals is positioned such that its distance from the axis of a polygonal piston having a multiplicity of seal inserting grooves 3 is shorter in centrifugal direction than that of apex portion 4 of the piston. With such an arrangement, sealing surface is obtained by urging the apex seals onto the inner wall surface of center casing by a force proportional to the biasing force of springs 6, while sliding them smoothly along the wall surface of said grooves 3, whereby it is prevented that chatter marks be formed on the inner surface of center casing.
