Abstract

CONSTITUTION: A glass tube for receiving a mercury lamp 1 is formed, for example, of a cylinder member 11 whose ends have an inner diameter aϕ and an outer diameter bϕ. The cylinder member 11 is gradually transformed into a small diameter cylinder portion 14 having a wall thickness t and an inner diameter cϕ smaller than aϕ at the portion approximately corresponding to the main discharging and light- emitting portion of the mercury lamp 1. Thus, the spacing between the inner surface of the small diameter cylinder portion 14 and the outer surface of the main discharging and light-emitting portion becomes narrower than other portions. Therefore, the cooling water in this region flows faster than the other regions so that effective cooling can be achieved.
