Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain optically active phenylglycine in high yield by treating the N-acyl derivative of phenylglycine with a specific amine thereby causing asymmetric conversion and optical resolution simultaneously.
CONSTITUTION: An N-acyl derivative of dl-phenylglycine, d-phenylglycine or l-phenylglycine is treated with d-(α)-phenylethylamine or l-(α)-phenylethylamine to give a salt. The asymmetric conversion between d- and l-isomers and the optical resolution are simultaneously accomplished by the heat treatment of the salt to give an optical isomer of α-phenylethylamine salt of N-acylated phenylglycine. The isomer is treated with an acid and then deacylated to give an optical isomer of phenylglycine selectively. The above heat treatment extremely improves the yield of the optical isomer, because it causes the simultaneous asymmetric conversion and formation of the hardly soluble salt of the optical isomer which is deposited from the reaction mixture.
