Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform optical resolution of 1-phenylethylamine useful as an optical resolution agent for racemic acids, etc. easily, in a high yield, by using cinnamic acid or cis-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid as a resolution agent in the selective crystallization method.
CONSTITUTION: In the optical resolution of 1-phenylethylamine, cinnamic acid or cis-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid is used as a resolution agent to give the salt of 1-phenylethylamine. The optically active acid salt is selectively crystallized from the salt solution. For example, the salt of the resolution agent and (±)-1-phenylethylamine which may contain an excess amount of one of the optically active isomers, is dissolved in a liquid diluent, e.g. methanol, etc., to a supersaturated state. A small amount of the crystal of the salt of the resolution agent and the optically active 1-phenylethylamine is added to the above solution as seed crystals, and the salt of an active isomer same as the optically active isomer seed crystals is separated by crystallization.
