Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound with little by-product of evaporating residue, in high purity, advantageous to production of vinyl chloride according to the oxychlorination process, by reacting chlorine with ethylene in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst at a specific concentration of free chlorine in the reaction solution, and a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorine is reacted with ethylene in the presence of a solvent, e.g. ethane dichloride, and a catalyst, e.g. anhydrous ferric chloride, by keeping the free chlorine in a reaction solution at 0.15W0.5wt%, preferably 0.15W0.4wt%, at 55°CWthe boiling point of the solvent, preferably 55W75°C, to suppress greatly the by-product of evaporating residue having an inhibitory effect on the production of vinyl chloride by the oxychlorination process, and obtain the object compound in high purity. This method eliminates the evaporation stage after the washing and dehydration in the vinyl chloride production mentioned above and enables the advantageous production of vinyl chloride.
