Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong greatly the life of the solid acid catalyst in isomerization and improve the quality of the adamantanes produced, by pretreating and removing the heavy fraction contained in a ≥10C tricyclic saturated hydrocarbon (raw material) with distillation or adsorption.
CONSTITUTION: The heavy fraction, e.g. trimer or tetramer of cyclopentadiene, contained in a ≥10C tricyclic saturated hydrocarbon, e.g. preferably endo-trimethylene-norbornane obtained by complete hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene, is removed in advance with distillation or adsorption, in producing adamantanes by isomerization of the above-mentioned hydrocarbon in the pressure of the known solid acid catalyst. The remaining heavy fraction in the raw material is 300ppm or less preferably 250ppm or less, and the deteriorating speed of the isomerizing catalyst is 0.1 conversion/hour or below, to maintain the catalytic activity for a long term and obtain the object compound or high quality and purity.
