Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound having improved electrical properties and useful as an inpregnating oil for capacitors, by washing a crude alkylphenyl phosphate with an alkali, adsorbing with china clay in a dry gas atmosphere, and dehydrating under reduced pressure, thereby removing the impurities such as free phenols.
CONSTITUTION: A crude alkylphenyl phosphate (e.g. tricresyl phosphate) containing ≤0.03wt% of free phenols is purified by (1) washing with an alkaline compound (e.g. 1W7% aqueous solution of ammonia), (2) adsorbing the impurities with china clay (e.g. acid clay) in a dry gas atmosphere, and (3) dehydrating under reduced pressure. Capacitors impregnated with the compound have higher survival rate (a1, a2, and a4) than those impregnated with crude oil (a6 and a9) by applying an AC voltage higher than the rating voltage.
