Abstract

PURPOSE: To synthesize the pure N-substituted phenyl glycine through the use of safe reagents only by electrolytically reducing the specific benzylidene amines in the presence of tetraalkyl ammonium salt and carbonic acid gas with a mercury cathode.
CONSTITUTION: Benzylidene-(n)-butyl amine or other expressed by general formula R-CH=N-R' is electrolytically reduced in the electrolyte mixed with a polar nonaqueous solvent such as acetonitrile or other by using a mercury cathode in the presence of tetraalkyl ammonium salt such as tetraethyl ammonium iodide or other and carbonic acid gas. As a result, the reaction of formula I takes place and this yields the N-substituted phenyl glycine and benzyl amines being by-products. After the termination of the electrolysis, the solvent is distilled away and water is added to the residue and the benzyl amines are extracted by chloroform or other. Next, a mineral acid is added to the water layer to make its pH to 2 to 6 and this yields the N-substituted phenyl glycine as white solid.
