Abstract

PURPOSE: After the polycondensation of a cyanoacetic ester and formaldehyde is effected in the presence of a catalyst of an alkali metal hydroxide, the resulting polymer is depolymerized to produce title compound of high quality and stability that is used for instant adhesive with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: The polycondensation reaction between (A) a cyanoacetic ester as ethyl cyanoacetate and (B) formaldehyde is conducted in the presence of (C) an alkali metal hydroxide or a basic ion-exchange resin in (D) a solvent consisting of an organic solvent substantially insoluble in water as toluene and water at a temperature lower than 60°C. Then, the polymer is depolymerized by heating in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide at a temperature of about 200°C to produce the objective compound.
