Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an industrial chemical, simultaneoutly and easily in high yield, by oxidizing an aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one methyl substituent in the liquid phase, with a specific strong by acidic catalyst, in the presence of methanol.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of an aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one methyl substituent, e.g., toluene or p-xylene, is oxidized in the liquid phase with a strong by acidic catalyst, e.g., 0.0005W0.025mol of HBr or HBr and hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, in the presence of 0.15mol or more of methanol, by O2 or a gas containing O2, at 150W220°C and 0.1W10kg/cm2G, to give benzaldehydes and benzyl alcohols at the same time. Although HBr alone is effective, a combination of it with 0.05W2.0wt% of a strong acid brings about much more effects.
