Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove hydrogen sulfide and free cyanogen present in waste water in the form of thiocyanic acid by the procedure in which the washing waste water of coke oven gas is made alkaline and then aerated with a gas oxygen such as air at a specific temperature or more.
CONSTITUTION: The washing waste water of the coke oven gas is made alkaline and put in the container 1. And, the container is placed in the constant-temperature tank 2 of 60°C or more and kept at the temperature, and then a gas containing oxygen, e.g., air, is blown into the waste water for more than 30min for aeration, whereupon the hydrogen sulfide converted into an alkali sulfide by alkalinization in the waste water is further converted into an alkali polysulfide by reaction with oxygen and then it reacts with free cyanogen ion present in the waste water to form thiocyanic acid. Thus, the hydrogen sulfide and free cyanogen fixed in this way can be removed.
