Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound having excellent purity and color tone, and useful as a gelling agent and polymerization inhibitor of styrene, etc., by the dealkylation of an easily synthesizable 2,3-dialkoxy-1,4-naphtoquinone with a Lewis acid in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: 2,3-Dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone is prepared by the dealkylation of 2,3-dialkoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (pref. 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone obtained from 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone and the corresponding alcohol at low cost) with a Lewis acid (e.g. AlCl3 and BF3), in an organic solvent (pref. a solvent of Friedel-Crafts reaction, e.g. nitrobenzene, CCl4 etc.).
USE: Gelling agent of unsaturated polyesters.
