Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a variable valve lift engine, in which a roller is supported in freely rotatable manner at the portion or rocker arm where it is held in contact with cam and said roller is shaped to be circular in its cross section taken in the direction of rocker shaft, whereby occurrnece of wear and pitching at the portion of cam surface where it is held in contact with rocker arm can be prevented. CONSTITUTION:In high-speed operation of engine, three-dimensional cam 33 is shifted to the left in the drawing by hydraulic cylinder 35, so that roller 27 is held in contact with the right side 33b of cam 33. In this state, lift of cam 33 is sufficiently large to provide a cam phase and a valve lift necessary for high-speed operarion of engine. In shifting engine operation from its high-speed operation to low-speed operation, cam 33 is shifted to the right. Here, roller 27 rotatably supported by rocker arm 19 rolls helically on the surface of cam 33 since cam 33 is rotated together with cam shaft 31. Further, since roller 27 is shaped to have a circular cross section, it is shifted smoothly to the left of cam 33 without causing wear and pitching of the roller 27 and cam 33.
