Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cation exchange membrane capable of maintaining high current efficiency in the presence of highly concentrated caustic soda and preventing increase in bath voltage, by the reaction of a filmy fluorocarbon polymer with an amine followed by carrying out the reaction in a hydrobromic acid-phenol solution.
CONSTITUTION: One of the two surfaces of a filmy fluorocarbon polymer having -OCF2CF2SO2X group (X is halogen except F) or said group and sulfonic acid group is made to react with a monoamine, diamine, or polymine. The resulting filmy polymer is then brought into contact with pyridine followed by carrying out the reaction in a hydrobromic acid-phenol solution, thus giving the objective membrane. Said amine is preferably, e.g., an alkylamine with a long methylene chain, an aryl group-carring amine; especially the latter, such as amiline, its derivative, which is highly effective in preventing increase in bath voltage.
