Abstract
PURPOSE:To automatically detect a defect portion of an optical fiber, obtd. by drawing, by setting a defect detector on the way to a coiling drum. CONSTITUTION:A glass base material is heat softened and drawn to obtain optical fiber 10. Fiber 10 is fed into defect detector 20, where it is introduced between pulleys 26, 27 set in water 24 in container 23 through sending-out pulley 21 applied with back tension, sending-out pinch pulley 22 and pulley 25. Fiber 10 is applied with defect detecting tension between pulleys 26, 27, and in case it has a defect, ultrasonic waves generated from fiber 10 are detected with ultrasonic detector 32. Fiber 10 is then passed by way of pulley 28, pulling pulley 29 and pulling pinch pulley 30, dried with a dryer, and coiled round a coiling drum.
