Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain sulfuric acid by reheating SO2 from an absorption tower with heat generated by combustion of S; converting the reheated SO2 into SO3; and allowing the heat of conversion to be absorbed in cooling fluid to suitably regulate the conversion temp. as well as to prevent corrosion of the equipment.
CONSTITUTION: An SO2 gas contg. excess O2 from S combustion furnace 1 is passed through waste heat boiler 13 and heat exchanger 14 arranged in a row to regulate the gas to an appropriate temp., and the gas reaches former converters 8A, 8B, 8C, where part of it is converted into SO3. This SO3 is absorbed in sulfuric acid in absorption tower 11. The remaining low temp. unreacted SO2 contains sulfuric acid mist and has corrosiveness, so it is reheated with the above combustion SO2 gas in exchanger 14 to be regulated to an appropriate temp. as well as to prevent corrosion of the equipment. The reheated SO2 reaches latter absorption tower 12 through latter converter 8D or converters 8D, 8E. Since the converted gases leaving former and latter converters 8A, 8D are cooled with cooling fluids in economizers 18, 20, respectively, optimum temp. regulation corresponding to load is considerably facilitated as compared to a conventional method.
