Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An ethyl carboxyethyl cellulose wherein ethyl groups and carboxyethyl groups are bonded to cellulose through ether linkages.
USE: Enteric coating agent. Soluble to non-toxic organic sovents such as ethyl alcohol. The hydrophilic characteristics of the compound can be reduced by introducing ethyl groups to the chain.
PROCESS: The objective ethyl carboxyethyl cellulose can be prepared, e.g. by (1) reacting cellulose with α- or β-halogenopropionic acid in the presence of an alkali, in a solvent, thereby introducing the carboxyethyl group to the cellulose skeleton, and (2) introducing ethyl groups to the carboxyethylated cellulose by reacting with an alkylation agent such as ethyl chloride, ethyl bromide, etc., in the presence of an alkali.
