Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a rapid response of O2 sensor by dividing at least one side of exhaust pipe and intake pipe into two flow-ways permitting one flow way to close under low load and low speed period to increase the flow speed for the air fuel ratio controller of an internal combustion engine provided with a ternary catalyzer within an exhaust system.
CONSTITUTION: Division walls 14 and 18 are provided respectively for the upper stream of a sensor 13 disposed within intake pipe 7 and exhaust pipe 11 of the internal combustion engine 1, respective pipe being divided respectively into two flow-ways in a longitudinal direction, and for one of those flow-ways 7a, 11a, valve units 19 and 20 being provided to close under low load and low speed period of an engine. In operating low load and low speed, the large intake negative pressure is applied to a valve box 21, one side of flow-way being closed by a valve unit to increase the flow speed of other flow-way. Consequently, the response delay of O2 sensor 13 caused by decreasing speed in low load and low speed period is improved, enabling the air fuel ratioto correct rapidly with control circuit unit 14 and controllable magnetic valve 16.
