Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high purity α-type hemihydrate gypsum with a favorable crystal from gypsum having a little value in use in an industrially advantageous manner by suspending gypsum in sulfuric acid formed in production of titanium oxide and by heat agitating the suspension in the presence of fluorine ion.
CONSTITUTION: Gypsum is suspended in waste sulfuric acid contg. inorg. impurities as well as above 130g/l of sulfuric acid formed in production of titanium oxide. The suspension is then agitated at 80°CWthe b.p. under ordinary press. in the presence of 0.1W3.0, pref. 0.3W1.0% fluorine ion to the waste acid, thus producing α-type hemihydrate gypsum. Since a fluorine ion supply substance must be added before the gyspum begins to be converted into α-type hemihydrate gypsum, it is desirable to previously add the substance to the waste sulfuric acid to be supplied to a reactor.
