Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the moldings of superior dimensional accuracy by burying the preforms in a powder pressure transmitting medium and hot-pressing the same in the molds having the specific inside dimensions with the maximum transverse size of said preforms as a reference.
CONSTITUTION: The preform obtained by molding ceramic powder or metal powder to a square plate (column), disc (column) or the like by ordinary methods such as die molding or other is buried in a powder pressure transmitting medium (e.g., graphite, boron nitride powder, etc.) in the undermentioned mold, thence it is hot pressed under about 150W600Kg/cm2 (temperature is 1400W1850°C in the case of boron nitride and 1800W2350°C in the case of SiC). Namely, the mold (e.g., carbon mold) having the inside dimensions less than 1.5 times the transverse maximum dimensions of the preform. This method yields the moldings of superior dimensional accuracy because the shrinkage in the transverse direction is suppressed. Further, the mold can be smaller in size, the amount of using the powder pressure transmitting medium can be smaller and the filling work becomes shorter in time.
