PURPOSE:To smooth a picture to be transferred after digital conversion and also to remove picture noises, by fixing the density in the center of the picture to an arithmetic mean between the maximum and minimum values among the density and circumference densities. CONSTITUTION:When picture signals for two sequences in the main scanning direction and those for three picture elements are suppied to buffer memory unit 1 at timing T1, the density of read picture element X and dinsity of circumferential picture elements A to H are read out at timing T2. The maximum and minimum values detected by maximum-value detector 2 and minimum-value detector 3 among signals outputted in parallel are supplied to adder 4, where the both are added at timing T3. Next, divider 5 halves the sum at timing T4 to output data with the density corrected. In this way, the smoothing of the output picture and the removal of picture noises can be realized.
