Abstract

PURPOSE: To shorten a process for manufacturing a tappet by press work and reduce the weight and cost of the tappet, by establishing a method of manufacturing the tappet.
CONSTITUTION: A thin steel sheet cut off to prescribed dimensions is shaped to a bottomed cylinder 1 by several press-drawing steps. A projection 3 whose top is flat is formed on the inside centaral part of the bottom of the cylinder 1. The cylinder 1 is cut to a prescribed height. The bottom 2 of the cylinder is slightly retracted in through several steps. The peripheral part of the bottom is so cut that slits 6 are provided. The bottomed cylinder 1 is carburized, quenched and tempered. The peripheral surface of the cylinder is ground. The other surface of the cylinder is barrel-finished. The tappet is thus completed.
