Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polycarbonate free from discoloration industrially advantageously, by melt polycondensation of a solution a polycarbonate oligomer having a specific molecular weight in methylene chloride concentrated under specific temperature conditions, with a dihydroxydiaryl compound.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxydiaryl compound is reacted with a phenol and phosgene at a 1:0.2W1:1.1W1.5 molar ratio in the presence of methylene chloride to give a reaction product comprising a polycarbonate having a molecular weight≤3,000 and terminal phenoxycarbonyl groups. The solution is then concentrated at a temperature T(°C) of the formula [C is the polycarbonate oligomer concentration (wt%)] to 150°C until the moisture content in the solution becomes ≤100ppm, preferably ≤50ppm, then at a temperature of the formula or above to give a colorless melt oligomer, which is melt polycondensed with a dihydroxydiaryl compound to form a polycarbonate free from discoloation.
