Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce NOx, CO and HC in the exhaust gas simultaneously and very effectively by providing a thermal reactor receiving the exhaust gas from excessively rich air-fuel mixture cylinders and excessively lean air-fuel mixture cylinders and arranging such as to cause alternate combustion of these air-fuel mixtures.
CONSTITUTION: The opening of an exhaust port 12 is directed in a thermal reactor 13 such that spiral vortex of the exhaust gas of the excessively rich and excessively lean air-fuel mixtures. With this arrangement, the exhaust gases produced from the respective, excessively rich and excessively lean air-fuel mixtures, emerging from the exhaust port 12, cause formation of spiral vortexes from each other, so that they are sufficiently mixed together. Thus, CO and HC in the exhaust gas produced from the excessively rich and excessively lean air-fuel mixtures are almost completely combusted with the residual oxygen in the exhaust gas, and the resultant exhaust gas with low CO and HC concentrations is exhausted through an exhaust tube to atmosphere. In addition, since the cylinders consist of those, in which the combustion is caused at an excessively rich air-to-fuel ratio, and those, in which the combustion is caused at an excessively lean air-to-fuel ratio, the generation of NOx can be extremely reduced.
