Abstract
PURPOSE: The gas-phase catalytic reaction between methanol and ammonia and the reaction intermediates is effected by feeding them under specific conditions from a plurality of inlets, thus reducing the unreacted methanol and by-products even when the N/C ratio in the reaction system is low and producing title mixture with high dimethylamine content.
CONSTITUTION: Methanol and ammonia or they along with methylamine, trimethylamine are divided into at least 2 portions where the atomic ratios of nitrogen to carbon (N/C) are different. The portion of the lowest N/C is fed from the head inlet of the reactor and the higher portion is charged from the middle inlet so that the gas-phase catalytic reaction is carried out in such a condition that the N/C ratio is low at the part near the top inlet. At the time, the N/C ratio at the head inlet is made 0.1 or more lower than the N/C ratio of the total feedstock and the feed of all feedstock is completed at the part where the catalyst amount measured from the head of the reactor becomes 0.2W0.4 lt per 1 Kl/hour (STP) of the total feedstock gas.
