Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an amino derivative which is a dye intermediate useful for fluorescent brightening agents, by catalytically reducing 4,4'-dinitrostilbene-2,2'- disulfonic acid in the presence of a nickel catalyst in an aqueous solvent.
CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Dinitostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid or its salt is reduced in the presence of a nickel catalyst, e.g. nickel formate, Raney nickel, or reduced nickel in water or an aqueous medium, preferably water, at room temperature to 200°C, preferably 50W120°C, and 2W100kg/cm2 to give 4,4'-diaminostilbene- 2,2'- disulfonic acid or its salt.
EFFECT: Enormous costs for pollution control, e.g. equipment and treatment are unnecessary.
