Abstract

PURPOSE: A highly oxygen-absorbable, CO2 producing deoxidizing composition contains deoxidazable organic material, iron compound such as ferrous and/or ferric salts to produce ions of iron, and solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A deoxidizing composition is contained in air-tight bags in order to prevent food in the bags from decay or property change by absorbing oxygen in the bags. Such composition consists of deoxidizable organic material such as sodium ascorbate, iron compound such as ferrous and/or ferric salts to produce ions of iron, and solvent selected from the group of water and alcohol. To apply this composition, it is carried by porous material such as kieselguhr, fiber sheet or plate furnace slag and contained in film bags which are gas-permeable but which do not pass water.
