Abstract

PURPOSE: The electrolytic anode oxidation of 2,4,6-trialkylphenol is conducted using a specific metal as the cathode, thus producing title compound that can readily be converted to 2,3,6-trialkylhydroquinone useful as synthetic intermediate of drugs and agricultural chemicals in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The anode oxidation of 2,4,6-trialkylphenol is carried out in an organic solvent containing water to form 4-hydroxy-2,4,6-trialkylhexa-2,5-dienone wherein lead or lead oxide is used as the anode and a metal of group Ib, IV or VIII in the periodic table, especially copper or silver is used as the cathode. A diaphragm as cationic exchange membrane may be employed and the selectivity and current efficiency become high.
