Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the title base material stably and continuously by perfectly isolating the inside and outside atmospheres of a transparent glass forming furnace with seal gas without contacting to the base material to protect a carbon heating element. CONSTITUTION:Light beams emitted from light source 21 are introduced into optical system 22 through fiber 27, and light beams emitted from system 22 are isolated by glass base material 4 and received in light receiving part 23. The beams are converted into electrical signals in part 23, and an electrical signal corresponding to a change in outside diameter of material 4 is taken out of controller 24 and memorized in memory circuit 25. After a time in proportion to the distance between the diameter change measuring position and drawing unit 28 is delayed with circuit 25, the signal is sent to actuate motor 26, thereby changing the inside diameter of unit 28 with motor 26. After a time to drawing unit 28' is delayed similarly, motor 26' is actuated to change the inside diameter of unit 28'. Seal gas is fed between units 28,28' to gas-seal the space between material 4 and units 28,28'.
