Abstract
PURPOSE: To initiate chlorination of a saturated hydrocarbon or a monochlorinated saturated hydrocarbon in the liquid phase, very safely without forming an explosive mixture, in the presence of a radical initiator.
CONSTITUTION: In the initiation of chlorination in the liquid phase of a 1W3C saturated hydrocabon or a monochlorinated saturated hydrocarbon (hydrocarbon raw material), in the presence of a radical initiator, e.g. an azobisnitrile, a partly chlorinated hydrocabon, e.g. a di- or polychlorinated one, which will not form an explosive mixture with chlorine, is reacted with chlorine, in the liquid phase. After confirming the steady chlorination, the chlorine concentration in the vapor phase in equilibrium with the liquid phase is adjusted to 5vol% or below, and the feed of the hydrocarbon raw material is started to initiate the chlorination of the hydrocarbon raw material safely.
EFFECT: The reaction may be initiated without danger of explosion of unreacted chlorine in the vapor phase, and at a low pressure even for a chlorinated hydrocarbon having a relatively high boiling point.
