Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve efficiency of catalystic converter manufacturing operation and to facilitate operation of inserting a catalystic element into the case by covering the catalytic element with end cushions having an annular flange and a peripheral cushion shaped in a long cylinddrical form. CONSTITUTION:Cylindrical catalytic element 1 made of ceramic honeycomb is covered with end cushions 3 made of metallic fiber material and having a substantially L-shaped cross section, which have an annulaer flange 2 to be fitted on corner portions of element 1, and a peripheral cushion 4 also made of metallic fiber material and shaped in a long cylindrical form so as to be fitted on the outside of element 1. That is, element 1 is placed in case 5 by the intermediary of these cushions 3, 4. In covering the element 1 with cushions 3, 4, peripheral cushion 4 is at first fitted on the outside of a guide sleeve 11 which is tapered toward one end, and then element 1 is inserted into the guide sleeve 11. When the guide sleeve 11 is removed subsequently, cushion 4 can be transferred onto element 1.
