Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:2-Butyloctane-1,8-diol compound of formula I. USE:A colorless and transparent liquid with a high flash point, stable to heat and light, useful as bases for cosmetics and medicines, e.g. oily phase materials for creams, or mineral oil substitutes for hair oils. PROCESS:A carboxylic acid of formula II, or its reactive derivative, e.g. its ester or an acid halide, is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. LiAlH4, to give a compound of formula I.
